Facts About Newry

The earliest signs of human settlement in Newry date back to 4,000BC. In its present form, as one of Northern Ireland’s newest cities, it has developed into a modern and exciting place with a rich heritage.

Known as the “Gateway to the North”, Newry sits across the counties of Armagh and Down with the river Clanrye river forming the dividing line between the counties.

Newry sits in a valley between the Mourne Mountains and the Ring of Gullion. The magical slopes of the Mourne Mountains featured as the entrance to Vaes Dothrak in Game of Thrones®. Some lower areas of the Mournes helped create the woodland scenes of Winterfell. The same mountain range is said to have inspired CS Lewis to create the epic Narnia.
