About Forkhill

Forkhill is a small village situated in South Armagh. It sits very close to the border. With a population of around 498, according to the Census in 2011, it is a small, close-knit community.

The village is well known for fishing and like many of the great selection of fishing lakes and rivers around the Ring of Gullion, the stream offers a good supply of brown trout.

Areas and features of interest around Forkhill include:

  • Urney/Urnaí a church and graveyard
  • GAC Peadar Ó Doirnín, a GAA Club is named after Peadar Ó Doirnín
  • Jackson’s folly, offering great views across the Ring of Gullion
  • Beairic Bhelmont, an Seanró / Belmont Barracks, Shanroe

Because of it’s proximity to the border, the Troubles in Forkill saw many incidents of conflict throughout the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s.
