About Bessbrook

This County Armagh village, gets its name from ‘Bess’ (Elizabeth) Nicholson. A wife of Joseph Nicholson, a linen industrialist based in the area during the 19th century. There is a stream in the outskirts of the village therefore forming the ‘Brook’ part of the name.

In terms of location, the village of Bessbrook is situated about 3 miles west of Newry in Co Armagh. Also nearby is the main Belfast-Dublin road and rail link.

On the outskirts of the village, crossing over the Carnlough River valley, is the Craigmore Viaduct. A most notable landmark, the Viaduct consists of 18 x 20-metre high arches and at one time, was the longest bridge in Ireland.
