Newry Flowers of the month – June

Whether it be Newry Flowers or flowers in any location, in the ever colourful language of flowers, symbolism and meaning was attached to different types of flowers. It then followed that some flowers would be associated with months of the year. Therefore, anyone born in a particular month could inherit the flower of that month. The language of flowers, as a concept, was first introduced in the early 18th century. Following on from this more and more authors carried on this tradition in later years and created further lists that associated flowers with dates in the calendar year.

The flowers associated with June or sometimes known as the June birth flowers are Rose and Honeysuckle.

Roses

Roses of course are a classic staple of the flower world and easily one of the most recognisable. They come in a huge range of colours and types. Attributed with many different meanings, the humble rose is very popular. From romantic gestures e.g. Red Roses on Valentine’s Day, through to beautiful white roses that might be used as Wedding flowers.

Honeysuckle

The Honeysuckle flower, the lesser known of the two flowers when compared to roses. More commonly found growing on a shrub or a vine, this could be one of the main reasons. As an experienced florist, we will say with some conviction that honeysuckle does not feature in bouquets very frequently at all.  Notwithstanding the Honeysuckle flower can make a great addition to your garden, bringing not only some colour but also attracting butterflies.

Flowers of the month – October

All too often when one considers the blooming of flowers, the vibrant colours of summer is what first comes to mind. However, the autumn month of October is filled with lively orange and deep rich red hues of colour.

Marigold and cosmos are the flowers mostly associated with October. Featuring an autumnal colour and a spicy fragrance, the Marigold flower is a fitting choice for October.

The Marigold has some interesting mentions throughout history. The Aztecs held the belief that the Marigold flower had properties associated with religion and medicine. It is believed that this civilisation would have used Marigolds for medicinal purposes to treat skin issues and inflammation.

To many the Marigold represents the virtues of determination and stubbornness. We could argue that these virtues are well represented because the Marigold itself is a sturdy and strong autumn flower.

Furthermore, the bright and colourful presentation leads many people to associate the Marigold with the a fond warmness and creativity.

Flowers of the month – September

September marks the beginning of the meteorological autumn in the Northern hemisphere. The Meteorological autumn consists of September, October and November. In contrast, it marks the beginning of the meteorological spring in the Southern hemisphere.

The flower associated with the month of September is the Aster which is the named after the Greek word for “Star”.  Similar to a daisy flower, the dainty and elegant shape of the Aster flower, leaves it easy to see why it takes this name. The Aster remains in bloom throughout the year making it one of the most vibrant autumn flowers.

A little more on the Greek mythology. To the ancient Greeks, the aster flower came into being because of the Greek god, Astraea. It is said Astraea was upset and sad by how few stars there was in the sky at night. The story continues, that she was so saddened by this that she began to cry. The tears that fell as she cried soon hit the ground and turned into the the starry shaped flowers that we know as Astars.

The Astar flower is also mentioned in historic events. The “Astar Revolution” occurred in Budapest, Hungary on 31 October 1918. It is said that this uprising became known by it’s name because the protesters whore the Astar flower.

The symbolism associated with the Astar flower is wisdom, valor and faith.

In the UK and Ireland, there are four common species of the Aster flower; Aster amellus, frikartii, novae-angliae and novi-belgii.

Flowers of the month – August

And so the month of August has arrived. We’re still asking ourselves how did that happen! Despite all the trials and tribulations that 2020 has thrown at us so far, the months still seem to have rolled by so fast this year.

Flowers associated with the month of August are the gladiolus and poppy. These are also sometimes referred to as birth flowers because they are associated with the month you are born.

The gladiolus can also be known by some people as the “Sword Lily” attributed by the thin and elongated shape of the plant. It can come in a variety of colours e.g. pink, red, orange, yellow, purple and white. The meaning associated with the gladiolus is a strength of character, remembrance, and sincerity.

The poppy is a well-known and easily recognisable for its bright red colouring. It is a strong symbol of remembrance of the tragedy and loss of life lost in World War 1. The meaning associated with the poppy is imagination.

As with every flower of the month, they each have a unique meaning. Therefore it is sure to make the recipient of your floral gift feel very special and it demonstrates that you put some extra thought into their gift.

COVID-19

Following government guidelines and advice from relevant health authorities, we had to close our florist in Newry to the public.
