Flowers of the month – September

September marks the beginning of the meteorological autumn in the Northern hemisphere. The Meteorological autumn consists of September, October and November. In contrast, it marks the beginning of the meteorological spring in the Southern hemisphere.

The flower associated with the month of September is the Aster which is the named after the Greek word for “Star”.  Similar to a daisy flower, the dainty and elegant shape of the Aster flower, leaves it easy to see why it takes this name. The Aster remains in bloom throughout the year making it one of the most vibrant autumn flowers.

A little more on the Greek mythology. To the ancient Greeks, the aster flower came into being because of the Greek god, Astraea. It is said Astraea was upset and sad by how few stars there was in the sky at night. The story continues, that she was so saddened by this that she began to cry. The tears that fell as she cried soon hit the ground and turned into the the starry shaped flowers that we know as Astars.

The Astar flower is also mentioned in historic events. The “Astar Revolution” occurred in Budapest, Hungary on 31 October 1918. It is said that this uprising became known by it’s name because the protesters whore the Astar flower.

The symbolism associated with the Astar flower is wisdom, valor and faith.

In the UK and Ireland, there are four common species of the Aster flower; Aster amellus, frikartii, novae-angliae and novi-belgii.
